Superintendent Message
Welcome to the 2009-10 school year!
In the face of adverse conditions in our world, in our work, in our economy, and in our state’s support of our school systems, we are prepared in spite of these problems to further improve the educational opportunities and experiences for our students. Here are some of what we have to offer, thanks to the continued support of our community:
- A highly educated and skilled teaching staff, with smaller classes and student to teacher ratios;
- Up to date instructional materials that are aligned with core standards and Oregon’s essential learning goals;
- The latest in technology support for all grades, K-12;
- A K-8 elementary school program that continues to meet and/or exceed state learning goals, taught by a 100% highly qualified staff;
- A new, proficiency based trimester structure in grades 9-12 aimed at graduating students based upon their readiness for the skilled workplace or continued higher education training;
- Our high school was listed in last year’s US NEWS AND WORLD REPORTS’ “Excellent American High Schools,” with a Bronze award ranking;
- Except for the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) standard regarding the percentage of students participating in the OAKS state testing, our high school students also MET in academic progress areas in both Math and Language Arts;
- A no cut, high quality extracurricular sports program, with one of the best small school facilities in the state;
- A free-to-residents pre-school program aims at preparing our youngest citizens with the skills to ready them for entry in to Kindergarten;
- A nationally funded, competitive 21st Century after school program that provides both recreational and educational experiences for Falls City School District residents, including home school and private school students;
- A summer study program for those in need;
- A state certified public and school library that is a branch of the CCRLS regional library system, providing members of all ages with access to library services throughout the region;
- An open door to students from other districts and school whose parents believe that their children can benefit form an exceptional experience of learning in smaller, more intimate classes under the guidance of student focused teaching and support professionals.
For those new to our district and school system, again, welcome. Your children will benefit immensely from attending our public schools. For those who are returning what’s described above is the result of the dedication, hard work, and commitment of the Falls City community and its added support of its schools beyond the limited resources provided by the state. It is the community that has patiently grown this quality school system.
Congratulations Falls City! We will continue to make you proud.
Dr. Peter M. Tarzian, Superintendent
